Christine Voigt - Mixed Media
I think of all my work as being sculptural; whether vessels, wall hangings, sound pieces, garden art, or ceremonial pieces. I am inspired by the infinite variety in nature and how light and color reflects and alters how objects appear. I try to build intensity and contrast into my pieces by juxtaposing different types of materials into a piece. For instance, I will stack glass shapes over mirror or polished metals to create reflections through the layers of glass, then add metal wire, mesh, screen, and/or wood to interrupt the light refraction or emphasize the shapes. Or, I may use dried material from nature to create texture, contrast, and variation as counter balance. For my ceramic ceremonial objects, I often add elements like metal, bamboo, or wire. Since I retired several years ago, I have been able to expand my knowledge of working with metal, wood, and glass by taking classes at Oregon College of Craft, Multnomah Arts Center, and the Guild of Oregon Woodworkers. I am always searching for new techniques, concepts, and uses of materials to enhance my life and work.
